During the Civil War, women would often practice in public activities such as nursing. Many women even dressed as men in order to fight during this time. Clara Barton, who was denied the opportunity to fight on the front line, volunteered as a nurse at the Battle of Antitam. She documented every event she incountered while at war in journals, now known as the Clara Barton Papers, which is located in the Library of Congress. In this battle she documents how miserable it was and how Sep. 17, 1862 was the bloodiest day in the military’s history. Today Clara Barton would definetly support the movement of letting women have the equal opportunity to join different combat roles and to fight on the front line.
My name is Courtney O'Bannon and I am currently a student at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. I am majoring in Allied Health and will eventually attend nursing school, where i hope to become a trauma nurse. I enjoy being around family, hanging out with friends, and eating Chick-fil-a. I feel very passionate about this topic and I hope this blog gives you some insight of women in combat today.
